Bologna is a city on a human scale and in the historical center can be easily explored on foot. An efficient public transport system allows to move quickly within in the city. 

Visitors arriving at Guglielmo Marconi International Airport can reach the  Central Station and the city center in a few minutes by the Aerobus – BLQ line. When major trade fairs are held, the BLQ bus continues its route up to the fair district called Bologna Fiere. 

Many car rental services with drivers and an efficient taxi service are available for visitors 24 hours a day. 

Visitors coming by car can find very convenient car parks, well connected with public transports, or benefit fromthe large underground parking areas and several garages in the historical center. 

Concerning tourist buses, there is a convenient stop in the city center and a well-organized welcome service at the Bologna bus station (Autostazione), only 100 meters far from the railway station and 15 minutes walk away from Piazza Maggiore. 

Visitors coming by car always have to consider the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), a large area within the historical center of Bologna where circulation of motor vehicles is daily restricted from 7 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. The entrances to the ZTL area are monitorated by an electronic surveillance system called Sirio.

Visitors are provided with special access to hotel facilities (including bed & breakfast structures), public garages and shops in the Limited Traffic Zone.

BY PLANE: GUGLIELMO MARCONI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

 

Guglielmo Marconi International Airport, 15 minutes by bus from the historical center, connecting Bologna to the main Italian and European airports. The Bologna airport is one of the most important stop in Italy for international flights and offers a wide choice of flight connections.

BY TRAIN: CENTRAL STATION

Thanks to its strategic geographic location, Bologna is the main Italian railway junction, made even more efficient by the high-speed trains: These railway network, together with the new railway station project, lead to greater development and a significant increase of daily passenger transit.

The station is open every day 24 hours a day.

The ticket office is open daily from 6.00 am to 21.00. You can aldo find self-service machines to buy tickets.

 

BY COACH: BUS STATION

The historical center of Bologna (inside the beltway) is an area with restricted access to tourist buses from 7.00 to 20.00 daily, including holidays.

Buses arrive to the bus station from the main cities in the Province of Bologna and from all major Italian and European cities. You can go the West to Spain, Portugal, or to Morocco in the South, East to Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, and North up to Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Norway, England, and many other places. The Bus station of Bologna is located in Piazza XX Settembre, 100 meters far from the main railway station called Bologna Centrale, and is the arrival point for all tour buses, with a reserved parking.

BY CAR

In Bologna there are two main Italian motorways that junction, linking the north and south of the country (A1 and A14), therefore the city it can be directly reached from all major Italian cities.

The historical center of Bologna (area inside the beltway) is an area with restricted access to cars from 7.00 to 20.00 daily, including holidays.

The Limited Traffic Zone of the historical Center (the Italian acronym is ZTL), is a wide area within the historic center of Bologna where motor vehicles movement is restricted from 7:00 to 20:00, every day. The electronic surveillance system called Sirio supervises the entrances to LTZ zones.

Within the LTZ there are some limited areas 24 hours a day: pedestrian and T areas (Via Rizzoli, Via Indipendenza, Via Ugo Bassi).  

Visitors are provided with special access to hotel facilities (including bed & breakfast structures), public garages and shops in the Limited Traffic Zone. In any case, access tickets to LTZ are available (from 1 to 4 days of access).
